Narrative Poetry

Another type of poem is Narrative Poems. These poems, like their name implies, tell a story about some event. Below I have posted an example of a narrative poem. Please read the poem, and in your post write your own narrative poem about an event real or imagined. Narrative poems do not have to be fictional; they can also be historical events.

Author: Kate Jennifer Johnstone, Australia

UNDER MY BED...

It’s that time again, that time that I dread,
That nerve-racking time, when I have to go to bed,
Mum tucks in the covers, “hope the bedbugs don’t bite”,
But I know there are worse things that lurk ‘round at night.

There’s a monster, you see, hiding down there,
That horrible mutant with a red eyed stare,
It hovers in the shadows ‘till the day is done,
Its toothy mouth smirks at the sight of the setting sun.

Mum comforts me, as my face turns to white,
“It’s okay sweetie. Everything’s alright.”
She turns on my night light and closes the door,
“Don’t you worry about those bedbugs anymore.”

We’re all alone now - it’s just the monster and me,
I bet it’s licking its lips now with sheer ecstasy,
I pull up the blankets to cover my head,
To hide me from that creature that lives under my bed.

I have a sudden thought, what if I catch him first?
So I creep out of the blankets, expecting the worst,
But he doesn’t emerge so I bend down to see,
That strange, frightening creature, that’s waiting for me.

I hold the sheet tight to invade his lair,
I jerk it straight back, but I can’t see much down there,
I find a few lint balls, some toys and a tack,
But the monster’s not there tonight, I guess he’s just slack!

Personification:

She heard the flower weeping, and gently reached down to comfort it.

Sensory Language: Sound - The flower screamed out in agonizing pain.
Taste - The sugary taste of honey was in her mouth.
Sight - Vibrant orange and red intermingled the soft petals.
Touch - It's petals were as smooth as a silk scarf.
Smell - Aromas of honeysuckle and magnolia rifted through the air.

Limericks

Today we will have fun with Limericks. A limerick is a silly poem that uses rhyme. An example is provided below. Your poem needs to be at least seven (7) lines long. Have fun!

There once was an old lady from Peru,
Who didn't know what she should do.
She was married to a man named Lou,
And he sat around all day in a shoe.
Each day they faced problems anew.
But that's what we all have to do;
Unless we are fortunate to only have a few.

Mother to Son

Read the poem bleow and respond to the questions which follow.

Mother to Son
by Langston Hughes

Well, son, I'll tell you;
Life for me aint's been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor--
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you fall now--
For I'se still goin', honey,
I's still climbin'
And life for me aint's been no crystal stair.

Poetry

Poetry

In your first post, you should explain how you feel about postry. Do you find it difficult to read, or do you think it's a wonderful way of expressing your feelings? From poetry we get lyrics for songs, from poetry we get clearer understandings of how a person feels about specific topics, from poetry we get inspiration to write or paint. Poetry is an art, but it is a nice genre of writing because ANYONE can write poetry.
